I’m in need of relieving some tension the following evening, so I slip on my workout clothes and head down to the lower level of the estate. When I approach the workout room, I see that Khristos is there. He’s pummeling the punching bag, sweat dripping down his bare chest.

I enter the room and tentatively approach him. Judging by the force he’s putting into his punches, he’s worked up over something. “Are you okay?”

He looks up and stills the swinging punching bag. “I’m fine. Just extremely irritated, and I needed an outlet.”

“Want to talk about it?” I offer.

Khristos steps away from the bag and faces me fully. “Another of my girls was found dead,” he states flatly.

“I’m so sorry, Khristos.”

He blows out a breath. “They’re my girls, and it’s my responsibility to protect them.” He looks at me with genuine pain in his gaze. “I’ve let them down.”

It’s obvious that he cares for each and every one of his employees, and I tread carefully with what I say. Guilt is a terrible emotion that can stay with a person far longer than what anyone else can see. “You can’t predict when and where these attacks will happen,” I tell him gently.

“True, but this situation should have been resolved already. I’ve even brought in the area’s top law enforcement into the fold, but Eryx keeps eluding them and my men.”

I gape at him and hope that I’ve misheard him. “You’ve brought the police into this?”

“They’re supernaturals, and I have them on my payroll. They won’t do anything without my permission,” he explains.

“It’s still dangerous involving them.”

He takes a step towards me and pushes his sweaty hair off his forehead. “Sooner or later, the council is going to get wind of what’s going on here, Livvy. We need to take him out as soon as possible.” He looks at me intently. “You need to take me to him through astral projection so I can end this feud permanently.”

I take a step back, my expression falling. “I can’t, Khristos.” Disappointment flashes in his gaze, and I tentatively step forward and touch his arm. “I care about you too much to take the chance that something could happen to you,” I say honestly.

Raw emotion churns in his gaze. “I’m willing to sacrifice myself to keep you safe, Livvy.”

We both stare at one another, and I feel an intense emotional connection with him. “We can end this without further bloodshed,” I say softly.

“I don’t see how. He shows no signs of stopping. I’ve got all my girls on lockdown now, but that just means he’ll likely turn his attention on a new target. I’m concerned that might turn out to be you.”

I am so frustrated with this situation. I know that Req’s innocent, but no one’s ever going to believe me.

“Livvy, all I want these days is for you and Roman to be safe. I want you both to lead long, fulfilling lives. Let me ensure that it happens.”

I shake my head. “I can’t be put in that situation.
